Wineries, Vineyards and Breweries

Goona Warra Vineyard

'Built in the mid-1860s by an early premier of Victoria, this historic Sunbury winery has been reborn as a hospitable, professionally run destination for wine tastings, private functions and Sunday lunch. The spectacular Great Hall and cellar in the original towering bluestone winery have been restored to provide a memorable food and wine experience in a picturesque vineyard setting. The label reproduces the 19th century original, and the winery is highly regarded as a source of top-notch regional wines, especially Chardonnay and Shiraz. The blends employing Merlot and Cabernet Franc are worth trying too.' RALPH KYTE-POWELL

Dining and Eating Out

Helen's Hill

'With its imposing gates, and architecturally designed building, this property stands out against the backdrop of rolling hills. There are two blocks in the hundred-acre vineyard, the 'old' block planted with Chardonnay and Pinot, which are over 20 years old, and the 'new' block, which has some experimental varieties such as Arneis. You can eat in the well-priced Vines Restaurant, wander through the gardens, or drink in the view of the hills from the casual BBQ area.' SALLY GUDGEON

Herring Island Environmental Sculpture Park

Accessible only by boat, Herring Island, 3.2 hectares in size, is just 3 km from the city, and the only substantial island in the Yarra River. This informal parkland has provided the inspiration for curator Maudie Palmer to develop a concept in which artists are commissioned to create site-specific sculptures. Created from natural materials such as stone, earth and wood, the sculptures appear as part of the landscape to reflect the Island's unique and tranquil setting. In particular, different types of stone have been brought from various locations to the island.
