Melbourne Theatre Company

Founded in 1953, Melbourne Theatre Company is the oldest professional theatre company in Australia. It is a semi-autonomous department of the University of Melbourne. Producing up to twelve plays in a subscription season, a full education program and a studio program, it is not only Victoria's major theatre company and one of the major performing arts companies in Australia, but one of the largest theatre companies in the English-speaking world.

National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA)

NICA is a national not-for-profit organisation. Funded primarily by the Australian Government through the Office for the Arts, NICA is auspice by Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne. As the only training institution of its kind in Australia, NICA provides professional training through a three year Bachelor of Circus Arts, preparing students from across Australia and the world for exciting careers in all facets of the circus industry. Competition for one of 24 places in the first year of the degree program is fierce and auditions are conducted in each state at the end of the year.

National Theatre

Built in 1920 as the Victory Theatre (a cinema), the National Theatre was converted into a live performance venue in 1972-74. It functions today as a community arts centre for over 70 groups including musical comedy performances, dance companies, multi-cultural events and school groups. Annual Festivals are held by groups as diverse as the Latvian Community, Surfing Films and the St Kilda Writers' Festival. Commercial events recently have included Janis Ian, Henry Rollins, Rufus Wainwright and Edgley Productions' Swan Lake. School holidays usually feature the Reel Holidays programme - recent release films shown at very low prices (usually free to adults accompanied by children).
